Government Documents Guide

Colorado College has been a depository for federal documents since 1890. Tutt Library is a selective depository and receives 1/3 of the available items in paper, microfiche, or electronic formats. Decisions about what to receive are based upon the needs of the 5th Congressional District and the Colorado College curriculum. We have most Congressional documents from 1789 - , and some departmental series from number 1 - . {See Collection Development Policy for more information.} If you need a publication that does not appear in the TIGER catalog, check this site or ask for help at the Tutt reference desk. Items not held at Tutt Library or accessible online may be available via Interlibrary Loan. Moreover, the Denver Public Library and the University of Colorado, Boulder, are both complete (100%) depositories and open to public use of their collections.

The University of Colorado, Colorado Springs and the Air Force Academy are also U.S. government publications depositories. Both libraries select 25% of the publications available. UCCS holds the only ERIC microfiche collection in the area. The Air Force Academy specializes in military topics. They also have NTIS technical publications on microfiche.

LOCATING U.S. GOVERNMENT DOCUMENTS IN TUTT LIBRARY

To retrieve a document be sure to print the online record or write down the title of the document and the SuDocs call number (e.g., A 13.88/2:INT-92). You will find the paper in the South Basement while microfiche is on the North 2nd Floor. CD-ROMs are shelved in the Documents Office. Maps are located in the map room in Tutt 1st Floor south, oversized maps are up on the North 2nd Floor and others are shelved with the main collection in the South Basement. Many records in the TIGER have web links to full text.

The TIGER catalog contains documents received since 1992, and earlier documents are being added. If you don’t find what you are looking for, or would like more information on your topic from U.S. Government sources, check this site. You will find databases that search for full text publications or citations. Ask the reference librarian for help in using the catalog, web pages, and location of items in the collection.

Congressional Universe, 1789-1969, and 1970-; CC and in-library use only

The 1970 - portion of this database provides full text publications from Congressional committees (Hearings Testimony, Committee Prints, Reports, and Documents) for recent years, and citations for earlier years. For documents with citations only, note the call number and title. Most of these documents are in Government Documents. Hearings and Committee Prints with a call number starting with “Y 4.” may be in the paper or microfiche collections. Documents and Reports are in the Serial Set paper collection (locate by Congress no. and session, Senate or House, Document or Report no.). From the 105th Congress (1996) on, these documents are in Docs microfiche. You may search for a subject, legislative history, witness, bill number, law and by type of publication. Full text is available for recent years of the Congressional Record, bills, laws, regulations, member biographies and committee rosters, inside Washington (newspaper articles), hot topics, and links to other web sites.
