Geology is the study of the materials and processes that space the Earth and other extraterrestrial bodies; it overlaps with many disciplines; See also Chemistry, Physics, Biology, and Water.
General
- 'Geologic Time: The Story of a Changing Earth' - examines the history of Earth; learn about the formation of Earth, dating the age of rocks, geologic time, plate tectonics, climate change, ocean circulation, evolution, extinction, ecology, & topics related to paleobiology. (SI)
- Deserts: Geology and Resources - general interest publication defines what is a desert, types of desert and desert landscape features, and processes that form desert landscape features, and how the Earth's atmospheric system influences aridity.
- Geographic Distribution of Major Hazards in the US - basic information and maps showing the distribution and frequency of selected natural hazards in the U.S.: earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, floods, hurricanes, and tornado hazards.
- GeoData.gov U.S. Maps & Data - geographic information system portal; search for federal, state, and local geographic data, maps (such as of transportation and natural hazards), and statistics. Also includes discussions of key resources for topics such as atmosphere and climate, business, and human health. {USA.gov.}
- National Geophysical Data - about 2000 data types for worldwide coverage in subjects of Space weather and solar events, Earth observations from space, Geomagnetic data and models, Natural hazards, Marine Geology and geophysics, and bathymetry and global relief
- Rock Cycle Animations - shows common rock-forming processes. See magma crystallize to form igneous rock, rock erosion to create sediment, transportation of sediment, deposition of sediment to create sedimentary rock, and the creation of a metamorphic rock. Animations can be paused and rewound to stress important points. (Carleton College, National Science Foundation)
Agencies
Colorado Geological Survey
U.S. Geological Survey
GLOBE Project - Global Land One-km Base Elevation data
Oak Ridge National Laboratory Distributed Active Archive Center - maintains data related to biogeochemical dynamics which are the result of the interactions between the biological, geological, and chemical components of the Earth's environment.
National Park Service
Geology and Park Geology
Geologic Maps
- Geologic Maps and Mapping - such maps describe the rocks and soils at the surface, provide information about what rocks lie at depth, describe the ages of rocks and soils, and show where features such as earthquake faults and landslides lie. Geologic maps are made by studying the rocks and materials exposed at the surface and depicting information about those rocks on a map.
- National Geologic Map Database - exhaustive database provides bibliographic access to many thousands of geologic, geophysical, and other kinds of maps available in USGS publication, websites, and in popular science journals, etc.
- Tapestry of Time and Terrain - this map combines shaded relief and geology on a single map of the 48 states. It is a useful resource for discussing physiographic provinces within the conterminous U.S. And North America Tapestry of Time and Terrain - combination of geologic map and shaded relief image revealing the geologic history of North America through the interrelation of rock type, topography and time. Regional surface processes as well as continent-scale tectonic events are exposed in the three dimensions of space and the fourth dimension, geologic time. This is an expansion of the U.S. Tapestry of Time and Terrain, 2000.
Publications
USGS Publications Warehouse contains: bibliographic citations for over 70,000 publications, full product and thematic map content for over 40,000 publications and USGS numbered series begun in 1880
Also:
- USGS Publications - 40 online booklets on geology-related topics: acid rain, birth of mountains, building stones of our nation's capital, changing continents, collecting rocks, deserts, earth's interior, earthquakes, fossils, gemstones, geologic history of Cape Cod, geologic time, glaciers, gold, the Ice Age, San Andreas fault, and volcanoes.
