GEOLOGIC MAP FOLIOS

This series was published by the U.S. Geological Survey during the later 1800s and early 1900s. These maps depict 2 types of spatial information: topographic and geological.

Features represented on the topographic maps are of three distinct kinds:

1. relief -- inequalities of surface (mountains, plains, hills, etc.),

2. drainage -- distribution of water (rivers, swamps, canals, etc.), and

3. cultural -- the works of man (cities, roads, railroads, etc.).

The geological maps are based on topographical information and also depict the distribution and type of rocks. Rocks are grouped into four major types and then further classified by age.
