U.S. Map Resources and Tools

 

Ancient World Mapping Center - promotes cartography, historical geography, and geographical information science within the field of ancient studies; the Center is updating and expansing the spatial and historical reference information assembled by the Classical Atlas Project; digital maps of the ancient world for educational use are available (most maps have a blank version suitable for quizzes or customization)

 

Datasets and Activities

National Map - interactive - design, print or download map layers for use in other software programs. Seamless, high-quality, high-resolution geospatial data and information from multiple partners. Includes surface elevation, topography, boundaries, hydrography, geographic names, transportation systems, structures, high-resolution orthoimagery, land cover, and more. map service. Use the "Find Place" tool to search for geographic features and to zoom in on specific coordinates anywhere in the United States. Alternatively, use the "Identify" tool to get the coordinates of any point in the U.S.

 

National Atlas of the U.S. - interactive - design and print page-sized maps or download map layers for use in other programs. Resolution is generally on a national or state scale. Includes hundreds of data layers relating to agriculture, biology, climate, environment, geology, history, transportation, people, and water.

 

USGS Maps and Aerial Photos Online - Links to USGS partner sites with USGS maps and aerial photo images from your Web browser.

 

Geospatial Data

Geospatial One-Stop - access to maps and geospatial data from multiple agencies (mostly Federal). Categories include Atmosphere, Climate, Culture, Demographic, Business, Economic, Human Health and Disease, Utilities, Communications, etc.

USGS Web Mapping Portal - seamless U.S. and global geospatial data sets, often created for specific times or events. Interactive maps cover disaster response, drought monitoring, vegetation mapping, and more.

 

GEODE - access, view, and download information from geospatial databases containing a broad spectrum of data produced by the USGS and other government agencies. Mostly Energy resources.

 

Names

Geographic Names Information System - GNIS allows fast searching for almost 2 million physical and cultural geographic features in the U.S. and Territories with topographic map indexing, longitude& latitude, and feature information resulting in topographic maps and aerial photography via the National Map and other sources.

 

 

Tools

Open Source Geospatial Foundation - to support and build the highest-quality open source geospatial software. The foundation's goal is to encourage the use and collaborative development of community-led projects

Geography: U.S. Geological Survey - provides online maps and map tools: find maps that are popular with teachers, tools for teaching students how to read and make maps, resources on land use, and satellite images related to the journey of Lewis and Clark; design your own map to display boundaries, geographic names, transportation systems, water, land cover, climate, and more.

 

Exploring Maps (Teacher packet) - lesson planshands designed to aid in teaching basic mapmaking and map reading skills. Includes a lesson on navigation methods of the early explorers.

The list of cartographic products contained in this guide, were culled from the official semi-annual publication List of Classes produced by the U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO)
